The roles filled by collision center personnel have evolved significantly over the years.  This includes both front office positions as well as production positions.  Basic positions of Manager, Estimator, Body Tech, and Painter are no longer sufficient to deal with the challenges of today’s collision repair.  The need to expand and redefine roles is partly due to the influence of insurer DRPs, the complexities of today’s vehicles, alternate parts sourcing options, and changes in the repair process itself.  The greatest impact inside a collision center is the need to shift the damage appraisal and blueprinting processes inside to a production area.  It is now no longer acceptable to merely write an “estimate” based on visual damage only.  Vehicles must be scanned, OE repair procedures must be researched, and all damaged parts need to be removed so that actual damage can be detected and written.  In this edition of IMPACT Collision Solutions, we will describe some of the roles needed in today’s collision repair businesses.
