Collision Center managers are challenged by both a shortage of personnel as well as the need to understand the motivations of up to four different generations of employees.  While each individual is unique, those of each generation have had certain shared experiences and common characteristics.  The generations, roughly grouped by birthdate and age, include Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials (or Gen Y) and the most recent, Gen Z.  The collision repair industry must recruit younger generations to learn to serve customers, write damage, make repairs, and calibrate electronics.  Senior staff will need to mentor younger members and newer generations may need to mentor seasoned staff whose skills may be out of date.  Production teams have long been an ideal and the generational transition may be a perfect time to take advantage of the collaborative traits of Millennials and Gen Z.  In this edition of IMPACT Collision Solutions, we will explore both the challenges and benefits of a multi-generational workforce.
