This month’s IMPACT Collision Solutions Tips, written by industry expert John Halstead, discusses The Basics of OE Repair Standards and Shop Certification. Original equipment (OE) manufacturer repair “guidelines” have always been the default standard embraced by I-CAR. However, collision centers are now, in many cases, “REQUIRED” to follow OE repair procedures and standards. This may be the result of manufacturers steering vehicle owners to their certified shops, OE parts specification, downstream liability for the failure of a repaired part or assembly, and market pressures. Every collision center must be aware, informed, and prepared to research and implement OE repair standards, to determine when it may be in their best interest to become “Certified” by a particular OE brand, and to choose to make required capital investments. This is an extremely complex issue that may differentiate market leaders versus a second tier of repairers.
